Chapter 6 · Edge Tactics

Wedges

If you place a disc on the single empty square between two opponent discs on an edge, it cannot be flipped back, so you can take that edge's corner however the opponent replies. You can make one only when the number of empty squares between the opponent discs is odd.

A wedge is a move that places your disc on a single empty square between two opponent discs on an edge. Edge discs flip only along the edge. So when both neighbors are opponent discs, the opponent can never flip this disc back. It stays until the end and traps the opponent discs toward the corner, so you can take that edge's corner however the opponent replies.

That is why on an edge you first count the empty squares between the opponent's discs. If the number is odd, you can make a wedge. With one square, wedge in right away; with three, play at one end and let the opponent flip it back from next to it, then wedge into the one square left. If the number is even, the moment you play on one square, the opponent plays right next to it and flips it back, so it does not become a wedge.

White to move. F8 is a single empty square on the edge with Black discs on both sides, E8 and G8. If White wedges in at F8, Black can never flip this disc back, and whatever Black replies, White can take H8. Use ▶ to play it (White F8 → Black D8 → White H8).
White to move. On this edge, the empty squares between the Black discs are two, H4 and H5 (even). If White enters H4, Black plays right next to it on H5 and flips the H4 disc back, so it does not become a wedge. Use ▶ to play it (White H4 → Black H5).
White to move. On this edge, there are three empty squares (odd) between the Black discs. If White plays at one end, D8, Black plays next to it on C8 and flips it back. Then the remaining B8 becomes a single square with Black discs on both sides, and White wedges in. Use ▶ to play it (White D8 → Black C8 → White B8).
