Chapter 3 · Mobility

Quiet Moves: Fewer Frontier Discs

A disc that touches an empty square among its eight neighbors is called a frontier disc. The opponent can trap and flip it to create new moves.

A quiet move exposes few of your own discs toward empty squares. If you flip inner discs that are already surrounded by discs, the opponent's discs outside remain and keep serving as footholds for your next moves. Here we count your frontier discs (discs next to empty squares), including those on the edges.

After Black F7, your frontier discs: 13. Press ▶ to play it and see the shape.
In the same position, after Black G4, your frontier discs: 10. Compare with the first board.
