Chapter 7 · Endgame

Counting to the End

With only a few empty squares left, the disc count after playing to the end is a more accurate guide than principles. For each candidate, follow the opponent's best reply and count.

Include the new disc and every flipped disc, and also check cases where a pass lets the same colour play twice in a row. A move that flips many discs at first does not necessarily leave more discs at the end.

After Black B8 and best replies, Black has 28 discs and White 36. Play it to the end with ▶ and count.
After Black B2 and best replies, Black has 35 discs and White 29. Play it to the end with ▶ and count.
